American singer-songwriter John Legend has teamed up with Benny Benassi for this lead cut from the Italian DJ and producer’s upcoming sixth studio album which will be released via Ultra Records later this year.
Dance The Pain Away was first premiered during Benassi’s live set at Coachella in April and was sent to US iTunes earlier this week. Legend’s soulful vocals are key to the song’s appeal, because Benassi’s EDM beats slowly build up but fail to find that big moment which would cause the dance floor to really kick off.
The B&W clip features shots aplenty of Mr Legend emoting, smoke billowing, a lady alluring, car driving and waves crashing. Check it out below.
Mika Feat. Pharrell Williams: Celebrate (New Music)
British singer/songwriter Mika has debuted the first single from his new album online.
The track titled ‘Celebrate’ was written by the ‘Grace Kelly’ singer along with Pharrell Williams and Londoner Ben ‘FrYars’ Garrett, with Nick Littlemore of Empire Of The Sun/Pnau fame on production duties.
Earlier today, Mika confirmed that his new record ‘The Origin Of Love’ will be released in the UK on 16 September. It will feature contributions from William Orbit, Benny Benassi and Klas Ahlund. He said of the record:
“It’s an album about crazy love songs and tolerance. It was recorded in Miami and London but mostly in frYars’ north London bedroom studio.”
‘Celebrate’ certainly sounds like the music of a man who is enjoying himself, thanks to its bouncy electronic beats, and Mika’s perky vocal. It also succeeds in distancing him from the gimmicky cartoon-like quality of his previous singles, and dragging him bang up to date with the tastes du jour.
That said, it doesn’t withstand multiple listens very well. It’s heavily reliant on the sparkly beats and lacks the imagination of his early releases. In his quest to be current, Mika may be risking losing what makes him stand out in the ever increasing crowd of electropop stars.
The album will be an interesting listen because there is some great talent attached. Ahlund is responsible for much of Robyn’s supreme ‘Body Talk’ output, and we all know what William Orbit can be capable of when he is at the top of his game.
I also still think ‘Make You Happy’ – the album teaser track he released a video for earlier this month – is brilliant, and was even keen on ‘Elle Me Dit’, a French language single released overseas last year.
All hope is yet to be lost.
